Red Fort Muzaffarabad Ajk, Pakistan

Red Fort known as Muzaffarabad Fort (Rutta Qila locally), is a 17th-century fortification made by the Chak dynasty, located in the city Muzaffarabad Azad Jammu and Kashmir Pakistan.

Chak rulers need to build today's Red Fort Muzaffarabad because they were afraid of being attacked by the Mughals in the city, so they initiated its construction in 1559 at a strategic location of Muzaffarabad the capital of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan in recent times.

As The Mughal Empire annexed Kashmir in 1587 so this fort lost its importance. However, in 1646 the construction of the fort was completed in the reign of Sultan Muzaffar Khan of the Bamba Dynasty (the founder of Muzaffarabad).


The Construction of Red Fort Muzaffarabad

The architecture of the Red Fort is very unique and it shows great expertise of makers in their design and structure, as it is surrounded by the River Neelum by three sides known as the Kishenganga River in ancient times.

There are Terraces of steps leading to the banks of the river in its northern part, and this has suffered damages caused by floods, waves, and tides of the River Neelum. The eastern side is very well protected as compared to the northern side.

Role of Maharaj Gulab Singh

Maharaja Gulab Singh of the Dogra dynasty began its reconstruction and extension in 1846 to use this Red Fort for political and military operations and this work was completed in 1926 by Maharaja Rambeer Singh who was his successor. There are two historical forts on opposite sides of the Neelum River named Red Fort and Black Fort.

Noisy Neelum river flowing around the fort adds to its beauty. Red fort is situated on a drive of about 5 km on the Neelum Road from Muzaffarabad that requires 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
