The history of Gojra city

In order to increase the knowledge of the readers, let me mention at the outset that the British government had constructed a 137 km canal from the Gojra branch and a 150 km long canal Jhang branch from 1865 to 1896 to settle the Sandal Bar and irrigate the land in the area.

Simultaneously, the railway line from Faisalabad to Shorkot was completed from 1886 to 1896, with a station at Gojra. Thus the city was founded in 1896.

Then people from districts of United India like Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and other districts were brought here and settled in Gojra city and surrounding areas.

Lala Jwala Singh's Janj House (Wedding House)

A very rich Sikh, Lala Jwala Singh, lived in this city at that time. He built a common house called Janj Home on a four-Kanal area near the railway station in 1906, with about twenty rooms, five bathrooms, and five latrines all around, leaving space in the middle of the house.

Every poor or rich, irrespective of religion and nationality, used to come and stay in this common house along with his Barati as there was no hotel, etc. at that time.

Barati's from far-flung areas used to come to the station and get off the train and stay in this 'Janj Ghar' for rest before going to any village.

For their comfort, this kind-hearted man, Lala Jwala, built this 'Janj Ghar' with his own money and ten beds were laid out in each room for the comfort of the guests.

There were 4 employees for the service and security of the house, whose salary was used to pay by Lala Jwala Singh out of his own pocket.

And those employees used to provide food and drink according to the season to the people of Janj ie Barat and provided fodder for animals of them. In return for this good deed, Lala Jwala Singh only sought the prayers of the people. This continued until 1947.

Story Behind Famous Proverb of Gojra

I would also like to tell a famous story of 1955 about Fazal Din alias Fazlu Jutt, who was a resident of 245 GB, a village near Gojra.

In his youth, he had married a beautiful girl of his choice, from the village while in those days it was considered a great sin to marry a woman of one's choice.

That girl was very fond of drinking Hookah like other women in the village. hookah is a device from which tobacco smoke passes through water before being inhaled.

On a winter's night, when all the wood had been soaked by the rain, Fazlu's wife had a desire to burn Huqqa.

So Fazlujat started burning one rupee, two rupees, and five rupee notes from his pocket as fuel instead of wood so that his new bride would not get angry and said "Kush la mere yaar, to hain mere dilda karar". Means: Smoke it, Oh my love, you are my love.

The incident became famous throughout the village as well as in the surrounding areas, thus becoming a proverb that is still remembered today.

Let me explain that in those days one rupee was very valuable, one rupee could buy forty kilos of wheat, one rupee could buy two kilos of ghee and one rupee could buy three kilos of goat meat. This is still known in our city Gojra and surrounding areas.
